How Hypnosis Can Help with Arachnophobia

How Hypnosis Can Help with Arachnophobia: Releasing the Fear

How Hypnosis Can Help with ArachnophobiaNot everyone likes spiders — that’s fairly normal — however for some people, the reaction goes far deeper than a neutral dislike. Sweaty palms, racing heart, a rising sense of panic, or even avoiding certain rooms or outdoor spaces altogether… these are all classic signs of arachnophobia — a fear of spiders that can be intense!

It is remarkably common too. According to studies, around 18% of adults in the UK report having a significant fear of spiders, with women being slightly more likely to experience it than men. For some, that fear is manageable, although for many others it affects the quality of life — dictating how and where they move, travel, clean, or even relax. What is particularly interesting is that in the UK, spiders are not actually dangerous to humans. None of our commonly found spiders are poisonous in a way that can truly harm us, which highlights that the phobia is less about factual danger and much more about an emotional and subconscious response.

And this is exactly where hypnosis can help to create meaningful change.

Where does the fear come from?

Often, people have no conscious memory of a single event that triggered their arachnophobia. In hypnosis, we find that the deeper root may lie in childhood experiences, learned behaviour from parents or caregivers, even an unexpected spider encounter that simply imprinted very deeply on the subconscious. Sometimes the mind has simply coded “spider = danger”, and from that moment onwards, even a small or harmless spider can cause an overwhelming reaction from the body.

How hypnosis can help with arachnophobia

Hypnosis allows us to access the subconscious mind — the part of us responsible for instincts, automatic reactions, and emotional responses. While in a relaxed and receptive trance state, we can begin to explore where the fear originated and gently reshape the inner response to spiders.

The process may involve:

  • Relaxation training: Teaching the body and nervous system how to stay calm rather than automatically launching into panic or fight-or-flight.

  • Reframing the perception: Helping the mind adopt a new belief such as “spiders are harmless in the UK”, “I am calm and safe”, “I can handle this easily”.

  • Visual practice in a calm state: Imagining future encounters with spiders whilst feeling safe and relaxed, which trains the brain to respond in a new way.

  • Regression or root cause work: In some cases it is necessary to gain insight into when and why the fear first took hold, so that we can reframe the event and soften or release the emotional charge.

Through guided sessions, it becomes possible to “rewire” the automatic response — turning panic into neutrality, or even gentle acceptance.

You are not alone — and you are not stuck this way

Fear of spiders is one of the most common phobias in the world, and hypnosis is recognised as an impactful form of treatment. Because we are working with your subconscious mind, change often feels natural, rather than forced. You find yourself reacting differently without trying too hard — perhaps noticing that you can calmly remove a spider from the bath, or simply allow it to sit in the corner of the ceiling without reacting negatively.

Most clients find that the fear reduces significantly after the first session but it takes a few sessions to completely negate the fear. Clients often do better when they engage with the simple homework that I gave them to complete between sessions, like listening to audio recordings and practical tasks.

The end result of the session does not require you to love spiders or want to keep one as a pet — simply to feel calm, safe, and empowered in their presence. I have had many clients who have been planning overseas trips (to countries where there are poisonous spiders) and for them being able to feel calmer than ever before has proved essential to their well-being.

A more peaceful home and mind

Imagine being able to move freely around your home or garden without scanning the walls or ceilings for spiders. Imagine feeling composed if a spider suddenly appears, knowing that you can calmly respond rather than react. That is the freedom that hypnosis can help you reclaim — restoring balance to your nervous system and trust in your own ability to handle life’s smaller creatures with ease.

Spiders in the UK are not poisonous, nor are they out to cause us harm. Once your subconscious truly believes that you are safe, your body, emotions, and reactions fall back into alignment too. Set yourself free !
