Freedom to Fly: How Hypnosis Helps with Fear of Flying
For many of us, the idea of travelling by plane conjures images of adventure, possibility, and far-off lands. Yet for some, it sparks a wave of anxiety — perhaps a tightening in the chest, racing thoughts, and an overwhelming urge to avoid booking the ticket altogether. Fear of flying, or aviophobia, is far more common than most people realise, and its impact can be limiting for family and friends as well as just as individuals, and also for careers and broader life experiences as well as holidays.
Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be this way.
Hypnosis offers a gentle yet powerful way of working with this fear — not by fighting it, instead by understanding and transforming the root cause of it.
Understanding the Fear Behind the Fear
When people experience anxiety about flying, the fear often seems to arise from specific triggers: maybe turbulence, or enclosed spaces, being high above the ground, and very often the idea of not being in control. These triggers can seem logical at first glance, however what hypnosis often reveals is that the fear behind the fear goes much deeper.
For some, it may be linked to a past event where they felt unsafe, even if it had nothing to do with planes. For others, the anxiety may not even be conscious — it may live quietly in the background until it’s activated by something like booking a flight, or even thinking about having to book a flight. Hypnosis helps people access this deeper, often hidden layer of their inner world — what we might call the subconscious or soul mind — and gently bring it into balance.
How Hypnosis Helps with Fear of Flying
Hypnosis works by guiding you into a relaxed, focused state — a completely safe journey where the conscious mind steps back a little, and the subconscious (or soul mind) becomes more accessible. In this state, we can explore the beliefs, associations, and emotional imprints that may be contributing to the fear.
Here’s what a typical fear of flying series of sessions might involve (in no particular order):
-
Dismantling the pattern: Once we know where it came from, we can begin to reframe it, bringing in calm, confidence, and safety as new emotional anchors.
-
Building inner safety: Through suggestion and visualisation, hypnosis can strengthen your sense of control, safety, and ease when thinking about flying — and eventually, when doing it.
-
Creating new pathways: Just as fear can be conditioned into us, peace and calm can be conditioned in. Many clients report that even the thought of flying begins to shift after just a couple of sessions.
- Uncovering the source: Whether it’s a forgotten memory, a learned pattern from childhood, a past flight experience that planted the seed, or even a past life, hypnosis can help trace the fear to its origin. It’s interesting to note that we do not always need to discover the source in order to help with the fear. (I have worked with hundreds of cases for fear of flying over the past 2 decades, and have only needed to regress the client to the source of the issue approx 20 percent of the time)
It is important to remember that hypnosis is not about tricking the mind or ignoring genuine feelings — it’s about bringing healing and balance to the nervous system and the soul. And when we do that, flying becomes not just possible, but empowering.
It is also important to remember that hypnosis is NOT a magic wand, and one session does NOT necessarily fix the problems. Like any form of therapeutic assistance, it can take a few sessions to fully resolve the problem.
A Simple Case Study …With a Twist
Many years ago I worked with Tom, who worked in the City of London. Part of his job involved a weekly one hour flight to Europe. Tom had begun to dread the flights due to his extreme anxiety around flying, and had also become increasingly unwell for a few days before he was due to fly. Tom only rang because his previous flight had been so bad that he had “woken up” on the floor of the aircraft with the cabin assistant holding his hand and asking him if he was ok (He wasn’t).
A couple of days after his first hypnosis session, T took his usual flight and texted me from the airport when he arrived. “Best flight for years, thank you” . Tom came for another session the following week and his next flight was equally good. At that point, he decided the hypnosis had worked forever. I told Tom that he probably needed another session, however he was adamant that he was “cured”. Months later, I met Tom’s wife, who I knew socially. As I feared, Tom had gone back “to his old ways” around flying, and in his wife’s words “is a mess again”. She had urged him to come back and see me, yet he hadn’t. There is no happy ending for this particular story, nonetheless it is testament to the fact that hypnosis helps with fear of flying, and when they give the process sufficient time, someone can achieve complete remission from the fear,
Final Thoughts
Fear of flying doesn’t define you. It’s a learned response, rather than a fixed identity. And that means it can be unlearned.
If you’ve ever found yourself turning down opportunities or feeling frustrated by your fear, hypnosis might just be the gentle turning point you’ve been seeking. With the right guidance, you can shift how you feel about flying — and perhaps how you feel about yourself as someone capable, resilient, and free to explore the world.
Because ultimately, it’s not just about getting on a plane — it’s about reclaiming the freedom to live fully.
With love,
