Did I Choose This? (Do We Choose Our Lives?)
A deeper dive into soul contracts, pre-birth planning, and the purpose behind our life circumstances
This question – “Do we choose our lives?” or more commonly “Did I choose this?” – often arises at pivotal moments like heartbreak, perhaps in times of loss or even in those quiet, reflective moments when we sense that something more meaningful is playing out behind the scenes of our life story.
It’s not always a comfortable question, particularly when we look at the more painful chapters. Yet, from a soul perspective, it’s one that can open the door to a deeper understanding of who we are and why we’re here.
Before the Beginning – The Soul’s Planning Stage
Many spiritual traditions and regression-based practices – including Life Between Lives sessions – point toward the idea that our soul doesn’t simply drop into life randomly. Instead, before we incarnate, there is a conscious process of pre-birth planning.
It’s said that we sit with our guides, mentors, and members of our soul family. Together, we look at what we’ve experienced in past lives, and what our soul now wishes to understand more deeply. And so we choose.
We don’t choose every detail or outcome. Rather, we choose the themes we want to explore. Lessons like compassion, forgiveness, self-worth, patience, or personal power. Then, we choose the circumstances that are most likely to bring those themes into our awareness.
This may include:
- The family we are born into
- Our core relationships or the absence of them
- Certain physical or emotional challenges
- Key turning points or catalysts
Not as punishment. Not as reward. Instead as opportunities for soul growth.
Soul Contracts – Agreements of the Heart
If pre-birth planning is the blueprint, then soul contracts are the agreements we make with others to help bring that blueprint to life.
These are often the people who play significant roles in our journey – both loving and difficult. A parent who abandons us. A partner who betrays us. A friend who walks beside us through every storm.
From a soul level, these individuals may have agreed to play their part so that we could experience a very specific aspect of our human self, and then rise beyond it.
It’s a radical thought – that those who challenge us most deeply may, in truth, love us enough to play the role we needed to grow.
This doesn’t mean excusing harmful behaviour or denying the pain. The human experience still needs to be honoured. Rather, it offers a wider lens through which we can understand life’s complexity.
Purpose Through Challenge
When life is joyful, it’s easy to see meaning. When it’s hard, the question returns: Did I Choose this and Why would I choose this?
And yet, often the most soul-expanding insights arise through our most intense initiations. The dark nights. The soul depths. The moments when we come face-to-face with who we really are beneath the roles we’ve been playing.
If we believe our soul came to evolve, then challenge isn’t failure – it’s fertile ground.
Pain becomes less about punishment and more about potential. Grief becomes a gateway to deeper compassion. Loss becomes an invitation to reconnect with what’s truly sacred.
Free Will Still Matters
Of course, soul contracts and pre-birth planning don’t override our free will. Nothing is set in stone.
We may have laid out a plan, yes – a trajectory or a soul journey, so to speak. Yet how we move through it, how we respond, and how we choose to grow… that is always up to us.
And this is where our true power lies.
We are not puppets of destiny. We are co-creators of experience, waking up to the deeper purpose of our own journey, one choice at a time.
An Invitation to Reflect
So… Did I choose this …do we choose our lives?
Perhaps a more interesting question is:
What if I did?
What might shift if I approached this situation, this relationship, this struggle… as something chosen by my soul, not to hurt me, instead to awaken me?
What might soften? What might heal? What new path might open?
In the end, life is not a test. It’s a soul journey.
Perhaps messy. Maybe miraculous. Yet potentially profoundly meaningful — if we choose to see it that way.
